At long last, Ramin's BEST OF DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES!

BEST CHEAP EATS

Grand Central Market/Bradbury Building - http://www.grandcentralsquare.com/ - A CAN”T MISS, this sprawling outdoor market offers a little of everything that’s good about LA.  Dozens of food stalls to choose from.  Eat a burrito the size of your head and (maybe) live to talk about it.  Mongolian BBQ and “pupusas” from El Salvador are also excellent.  Be sure to check out the historic Bradbury Building across the street - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradbury_Building.

Little Tokyo Historic District – Much to choose from here.  My personal favorites are noodles at Daikokuya http://www.daikoku-ten.com/dk_home.html and Orochon Ramen http://orochonramen.com/.  Professionals only at Orochon, please, or don’t come crying to me at the wedding when you’ve burned your taste buds off.

Philippe's Originalhttp://www.philippes.com/ - An LA landmark and fabled birthplace of the French dip sandwich, which Philippe himself accidentally “invented” 80 years ago when he dropped a sandwich into the gravy.  The beat cop he was serving it to ate it anyway, and the rest is history.  Sawdust on the floors, long but quick lines, nuclear mustard, cheap wines by the glass, and damn good hand-carved meat.

Langer's Delicatessenhttp://www.langersdeli.com/ - East coast family members may balk, but take it from The New Yorker magazine:  “The hot pastrami sandwich served at Langer’s Delicatessen in downtown Los Angeles is the finest hot pastrami sandwich in the world.”  (Read the whole article here:  http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2002/08/19/020819fa_fact4).  Order the Number 19.  Trust me.  Take the subway from Pershing Square to Alvarado.

Shekarchi http://losangeles.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=24873&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=44 - Farsi for “hunter,” and hands down the best Persian restaurant in Downtown LA (there are many).  WARNING:  The kabobs, jeweled rices, and stews are delectable, but this is largely the same menu we’ll be serving at the wedding.

Mendocino Farms - http://www.mendocinofarms.com/ - California wine country inspired sandwiches made from seasonal, organic, locally-grown ingredients.  Enjoy a fancy sandwich while sitting outside at the Cal Plaza amphitheater among throngs of corporate lackeys on their lunch breaks.  MON THROUGH FRI ONLY.

Café Metropol - http://www.cafemetropol.com/ - Hip spot with great food and wine in an industrial area of downtown that doubles as an artist district.  Fantastic (but pricey) sushi right next door at R-23.

Nick's Café - http://www.yelp.com/biz/nicks-cafe-los-angeles - Best breakfast downtown, period.  Rumored to be owned by two LAPD homicide detectives.  Belly up to the U-shaped counter and get your fix.  Bring your own defribillator.

Señor Fish - http://www.senorfishla.com/ - The seafood quesadilla is one of the biggest bargains in all of LA.  Lots of other super-fresh seafood choices served up Mexican style at unbeatable prices on the outskirts of Little Tokyo.

Empress Pavilion - http://www.empresspavilion.com/ - Very tasty and inexpensive dim sum in the heart of Chinatown.  Shitty service, but still worth the trip.

Yang Chow - http://www.yangchow.com/ - Top notch Chinese.  Their world famous “slippery shrimp” is a knockout.

Pete’s Café and Bar - http://www.petescafe.com/ - Nice space (mosaic tile, mahogany wood, big windows, patio) and solid grub.  Easy walk from anywhere downtown.

Redwood Bar & Grill -  http://www.theredwoodbar.com/site08/homewiframe.htm – Hilarious pirate-themed gastro-pub has good food and could just as easily be in the “Best Watering Holes” section of this list (see below).

The Original Pantryhttp://www.pantrycafe.com/index.html - Established in 1924 and owned by former mayor Richard Reardon, this LA landmark lunch counter features serviceable breakfast, grill items and hot plates.  Cheap, quick and always open.

Sultan - http://www.downtownnews.com/articles/2008/08/04/special/special03.txt - Hole-in-the-wall middle-eastern joint is a true hidden gem and one of the best bargains downtown.

BEST WATERING HOLES

The Standard Rooftop - http://www.standardhotels.com/los-angeles/restaurants-bars/rooftop-bar/

Golden Gopher - http://www.goldengopherbar.com/

7 Grand - http://www.sevengrand.la/main.html

Bar 107 - http://www.losanjealous.com/2006/06/13/the-truth-about-bar-107/

Broadway Bar - http://www.thebroadwaybar.net/

Edison - http://www.edisondowntown.com/main.htm

BEST ATTRACTIONS

Walt Disney Concert Hall - http://www.laphil.com/about/wdch_overview.cfm and Roy and Edna Disney Cal Arts Theater (REDCAT) - http://www.redcat.org/.  Also check out the Grand Avenue Festival (art and live music) right in front of the concert hall on Sunday the 28th.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) - http://www.moca.org/

Olvera Street - http://www.olvera-street.com/ and Union Station - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Station_(Los_Angeles)

Hello Again

by saraco 9/18/2008 10:24:00 PM

Wow, it is getting close!  We are so excited to have you all here in LA  and in anticipation we have finally put together some "To Do" lists for you.  Here is the first:

Some things I would like to do in LA on a day off (if not for the wedding planning stuff)

   1. The beach:

   2. Drive down highway 1 through Malibu and stop at Duke’s for nachos and a beer overlooking the ocean.  21150 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu,

        (310) 317-0777  http://www.dukesmalibu.com/

      3. Hiking  (I said I'd like to do, not that I actually do often)

      4. Drinks on the downtown Standard Hotel rooftop,  http://www.standardhotels.com/los-angeles/

      5. Shopping

  • Main Street in Santa Monica (eat at Urth Caffe, see below)
    • (From the 10 Freeway Westbound, exit at 4th Street and turn left (south). Drive 2 blocks , passing the Civic Center on your right, and turn right (west) at Pico Blvd-- the second stoplight. Proceed a couple blocks to the next stoplight and turn left (south) onto Main Street. Main Street runs south for 11 blocks with most restaurants and shopping concentrated toward the middle and south end of the street) http://mainstreetsm.com/homepage.shtml
  • Third Street between Fairfax and La Cienega West Hollywood adjacent by our house (eat at Joan’s on third, 8350 West Third Street , Los Angeles, http://www.joansonthird.com/)
  • Robertson Blvd, between W. 3rd and Beverly Blvd (eat at Newsroom Café, 120 N Robertson Blvd, Los Angeles, http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/81622/)
  • Rodeo between Wilshire Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd (eat at Barney Greengrass on the roof of Barney’s, 9570 Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills, http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/11283000/ )
      6. More Lunch
  • outside at Urth Caffé, casual, salads and sandwiches  (I’d probably go to Melrose if it was really a day off, but all the locations are good) http://www.urthcaffe.com/
    • Urth Caffé - West Hollywood, 8565 Melrose Avenue, (310) 659-0628, between Robertson and La Cienega
    • Urth Caffé - Beverly Hills, 267 S. Beverly Drive, (310) 205-9311, between Wilshire and Olympic.
    • Urth Caffé - Santa Monica, 2327 Main Street, (310) 314-7040, between Pico and Ocean Park.
  • Matsuhisa, a little pricey, but the best sushi ever, 129 N. La Cienega, Beverly Hills (great choice for dinner too)
  • Tito’s Tacos, 11222 Washington Place, Culver City. Careful if you are at work and have sound on: http://www.titostacos.com/.  No frills, but lots of deliciousness
  • Irv’s Burgers, 8289 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood.  Burger stand extraordinaire http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/78217/
  • Sky Taco, 5408 W. Pico Blvd, Los Angeles.  A bit of a fancier taco than Tito’s, but don’t let that scare you.   They have every kind of taco you can think of and always a choice of hard or soft shell, like heaven, and we haven’t found a bad flavor yet.

      7. Drinks and swimming at the Hotel Figueroa

     8. Visit to the Casa Walsh ala 90210 (I probably wouldn’t do this on an average day, but some of you may want to), 1675 E. Altadena Drive, Altadena, CA  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098749/locations

     9. The Getty Center, 1200 Getty Center Drive in Los Angeles, California (approximately 12 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles).  Take the tram up to see ocean- mountain views of the city.  Visit the gardens, bring your own wine and watch the sunset.  Oh, and you could see the art exhibits too if you're interested in that type of thing.  http://www.getty.edu/visit/

     10. Dinner
  • AOC, 8022 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, if you are feeling fancy, this is one of our favorites, Mediterranean small plates.  You probably need a reservation though or you can usually find a spot at the wine or cheese bar http://www.aocwinebar.com/
  • Picolo Restorante (or sometimes called 5 Dudley, Venice the address), our favorite Italian and sight of our first date.  Right off of the Venice boardwalk.  No reservations, so try to go at an off time or you may have to wait (but it is so worth it) http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/41173705/venice_ca/piccolo_ristorante.html
  • Parks BBQ, 955 S. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles (north of Olympic on the West side of Vermont) http://www.parksbbq.com/  Korean BBQ at its best
